Play date!
We spent the afternoon at Will's house with the other families from our newborn group (minus Cole's family and Em's family...). It was a lot of fun to see all of the babies and their new "tricks." and to visit with the parents. Here's a video of the boys enjoying some floor time (Millie was sleeping and Anna had left already...). We'll post more pictures and commentary soon ;)!
added: In the video above, Will is the chatty one in the beginning, Chase is the champion roller, and Jonathan is the cutie with all the hair :). More pictures from our playdate (stills this time) are in the following video! Katharine -- I'm really bummed that we didn't get the cameras out before Anna left! We'll have to get video of all the girls next time :).

Someday Somebody's Gonna Ask You...
... a question that you should say 'yes' to. Once in your life. Maybe tonight I've got a question for you.

Millie and I were very honored to accept Auntie LoLo's request to be in her wedding in September 2009. Millie will almost be 2 years old as she walks down the aisle for the first time. Grandma Lainey isn't too sure it will go well, but we've got plenty of time to prep and practice and if nothing else, Millie will be able to walk down the aisle holding mommy's hand. No matter what, she's going to be one beautiful little flower girl :). It's gonna be hard for her to not steal the show, but I'm pretty sure Auntie LoLo will make sure she is the star on that day (with Millie being a close second...). We've said it before, but it's worth saying again -- we are so happy for Lauren and Jason and can't wait for the big day!

Eat, Sleep, Play and Repeat
Throw in a couple of trips to the mall, a retirement party, dinner out at a restaurant, and a few visits from friends, and that pretty much describes Millie's days here in St. Louis. Some days have been heavier on sleep and others heavier on play, but no matter what the days have consisted of, Millie has had a great time and has had all kinds of new experiences.
Monday and Tuesday brought trips to the mall with Grandma (and Auntie LoLo on Monday) where Millie got to pick out a new dress for the party on Wednesday and a few other outfits just for fun. When mommy presented Millie with two dresses she did a good job of picking the one she wanted -- it was a good choice as she looked just adorable in it ;). It will make a good Easter dress next month too! She even spent an evening at home with Lainey, Grandpa, and Auntie LoLo on Tuesday while mom and dad went out on their first date since the addition to the family. She did pretty well until the last half hour or so when she was ready to nurse to sleep. A bottle just wasn't an acceptable substitute for mommy...
Millie was a hit at Grandpa Ric's retirement party at AB Wednesday night. She gave smiles and cries at all the right times. The crowd was a little over-whelming at times, so mommy and daddy found a quiet corner where Millie could play on the floor -- she was quite content with this solution and happy for people to come over and say "hi" to her away from all the chaos. It was great to be there and hear about all the great things Grandpa has done in his time at Anheuser-Busch. His team of lawyers had great things to say about him and his contributions both to the company and to their personal/professional development. He's going to be missed. Millie was touted as the driving force for Grandpa's retirement and had a staring role in the slide show :). She wasn't too happy about the picture they used though -- I don't think she liked everyone seeing her in her diaper with her onesie pulled over her head! She cried the minute it came up on the screen! After the party the family headed out to a nearby restaurant for dinner. Millie nursed and put her jammies on and then spent the evening sitting at the table with all the big people (in her car seat of course). She was happy as could be despite all the excitement of the evening and the increasingly late hours. She stayed up the whole time and didn't fall asleep until we were in the car going home. It was almost 10:00 before we all got to bed -- quite a late night!
(Millie has also decided that it's fun to chew on her clothes as well as her hands -- both of which led to the drool marks on her sweater :)!)
Thursday Millie found out what happens when you stay up late and party all night -- you have a hard time making it through the next day!! She was very tired on Thursday and had a day heavy on sleep and light on play. Lots of eating with mommy too :). We were all ready for a quiet day and the weather was bad so it all worked out for the best.
Daddy worked in the basement (it's nice that he can work remotely so that he doesn't have to take as many vacation days when we travel and can save them for more trips throughout the year) and mommy and Millie lazed about. Auntie LoLo joined us in the afternoon as her work got out early due to the bad weather. Auntie wasn't too offended when Millie wasn't interested in playing -- she knows what it's like to stay up too late partying :)! Millie went to bed on time last night and slept all the way to 7:00 this morning -- waking up just enough to eat every few hours. She seems to be in good spirits and ready for a day of play with Auntie who took the day off to be with her. She's currently having a great time with Lainey and Auntie LoLo in the living room ;). She's not going to know what to do next week when she doesn't have 5 people surrounding her at all times!
Millie has also demonstrated lots of new skills since we've been here. Her hand-eye-coordination is pretty remarkable and she's grabbing for and holding onto her little toys. Mr. Giraffe and Madame Butterfly have become fast favorites as have the Nut Brown Hares.
Millie rolled over FOUR more times on Tuesday morning while she was playing with mommy and Lainey. Of course, every time mommy brought out the video camera to capture the new skill, Millie refused. We also have FOUR videos of failed attempts ;). She hasn't rolled again since Tuesday, but we've been trying! Millie has also been expanding her verbal repertoire adding all kinds of new sounds. Grandma Lainey is sure she's going to be an early talker -- as well as an early walker and just all around genius baby :). Millie also seems to have developed a slight aversion to men since we've been here. She still loves her daddy, but Uncle BR and Soon-to-be-Uncle Jason have had a tough time getting on her good side. A simple "hello" and smile from either of them seems to be enough to send her into shrieks of terror. Even Grandpa has had a hard time keeping her happy for more than 10 minutes or so. Fortunately, we are pretty certain this is just a phase and that very soon Millie is going to think that her uncles are the greatest people in the world! Uncles are great for climbing on, playing hide-n-seek, and just general mischief and Millie is sure to figure that out pretty fast!
We're hoping that the weather clears up both here and in CT by tomorrow so that we can get home safely and without any hassles -- though if we had to stay an extra day I don't think anyone would be too upset :)!

Gratuitous Baby Pictures!
Here is Millie dressed in very snappy threads from Auntie Lolo and doing one of her favorite activities - Standing!
Millie is not sure about tubby time at the moment. Although she liked getting out even less. I think maybe next time, we are going to have to find a bigger sink! She is also working on of her other favorite activities here: Playing with and/or chewing on those little fingers!

He wasn't so sure he was going to let Millie leave the house in a mini-skirt! But as you can see, Millie is pretty mini herself making the skirt NOT so mini! It just about came down to her ankles and was so big in the waist we had to improvise a belt for her ;). Millie looks pretty certain of her cuteness in that first picture!

Having Fun at Grandma and Grandpa's!!
Well, on Saturday, we all survived another plane ride to St. Louis. We took off from LaGuardia and had an uneventful direct flight. Daddy felt like he was carrying a rock star onto the plane once all of the people starting oohing and aahing over the pretty little girl. Millie only cried for maybe two minutes total and only slightly offended the lady next to us (who apparently had zero tolerance for babies and people in general. I thought about changing Millie in the seat out of spite, but decided not to use the baby for evil). Unfortunately, when we got into town, Millie did not get to meet her friends Bob, Irina, and Tavi who all came down with colds and had to stay home in Chicago. She didn't even get to play with Auntie Lolo until Sunday because she was sick too. But she had lots of fun playing with Grandma and Grandpa as you can see in the videos. She had so much fun she stayed up until almost 10 (eastern)! The next day was a big one. First, Millie flipped from her tummy to her back all by herself! Then she got some Valentine's Day clothes from Auntie Lolo and got to play some more. Then she got to meet her Great Aunt Donna and cousin Rachel, who drove down from Springfield, IL. She also was a big tease with Uncle Brrr, giving him smiles and then crying when he had her. (As an Uncle for some time myself, I think that this will continue for a little while at least.) She also really chattered away all day long and went to bed on time. She gets to go shopping today and on Wednesday will likely be the hit of Grandpa Rick's retirement party at Anheuser-Busch. More news to come!
edited by Shannon to note: Notice that Grandma Lainey is wearing the same outfit in both videos but that baby Millie is not... Uh Oh! There was a Millie Bomb and it was messy!! :) Millie did indeed roll over Sunday morning -- sometime between 4:00 and 5:15 a.m. when she and mommy were downstairs playing (and everyone else in the house was still sleeping!). Mommy put Millie on her tummy and she was doing a great job of pushing up on her arms and looking around. The all of a sudden she calmly just flipped! It wasn't even during a frantic attempt to get off her tummy, it was during a very zen moment -- she just found her momentum and flipped ;O. Too bad mommy was the only one to see it! We've been encouraging a lot of tummy time ever since in an attempt to get her to do it again -- she's come close but hasn't quite done it yet. A mobile baby is coming though!!

Mommy found a new tickle spot on baby Millie -- her little thighs ;). She's been ticklish on her sides for a while, but this was a whole new story! It's a tough spot to find, but the first time I did, well see for yourself what happened... We definitely know where she gets the ticklish gene from -- her daddy!!

Family Additions
No, Millie isn't getting a little sibling... It's a bit early to even be thinking about that, at least from our perspective :). No, no sibling, but Millie IS getting a new uncle!! Soon-to-be-uncle Jason proposed to Auntie LoLo Friday night in St. Louis! We are so happy for them and so excited for Jason to officially become a member of our family. In all reality, he's been a member for quite some time -- now we just get to celebrate it! Auntie LoLo called with the news Friday night (we were first on the call list, mostly 'cause everyone else already knew...but we'll take it!) -- I actually knew the call was coming because I had just happened to talk to my parents earlier in the evening and Grandpa let it slip. It was good though 'cause I knew to stay up and wait for the call, and in theory that's what I did. I actually fell asleep on the couch waiting, but I managed to wake up enough to give a hearty congratulations squeal to Sister and listen to the proposal story (good job Jason!). We can't wait to see them next week to give them both big hugs in person -- and to see the ring of course! Looking forward to all that is ahead for both of you -- we love you guys!

Like Mother Like Daughter
Turns out my baptism dress fits Millie after all. I don't know if that's a comment on how small she is, or how big I was given that I was baptised at about two weeks and Millie is over three months.... It's probably more on how baptismal gowns are made :). (especially given that I was a little smaller than Millie was when I was born.) I'm not sure why she has such a look of fear on her face! She wasn't too happy to have the dress on at first, it might have been a little tight around the neck, so that's the one place we will likely need to have it altered. I think that even in two more months she'll be able to fit the rest of it. Of course, she had no problem wearing the bonnet with her little pea head! Millie was quite happy to wear the dress after I loosened the neck. I think she looks pretty precious -- and if she wears this, then that means she'll still be able to wear my wedding dress someday :).

Colds, Vaccines, and Thrush -- Oh MY!
We've had a busy couple of weeks compounded by a mildly sick baby who needed lots of hugs and cuddles. Millie's cold finally cleared up early last week, so we were clear to get her DTaP shot on Tuesday. Of course, the weekend before we noticed that her tongue was sporting more thrush than usual, so I made another appointment with the Dr. instead of just seeing the nurse for shots. Dr. Moore was happy to see that Millie's cold was gone and commented on the fact that she had been seeing a lot of the babies from our mommy group lately. Which was true -- we actually got off pretty easy compared to some of the other babies, lots of colds, ear infections and even a case of RSV. Somehow Millie got pegged as patient zero and we were told no more playdates for a while ;( (in a joking way). I'm pretty sure Millie was wrongly accused! We're just happy that everyone is on the mend now.
So, Millie got her shot after being officially diagnosed with thrush and given a prescription to clear it up. As always, Millie was a smiley delight at the Dr.'s office. She gave me a look of "why are you letting this happen?" as she was stuck with the shot, stuck out her little lip, gave a cry and then calmed back down as soon as I picked her up. There were no immediate effects of the shot and things went on as usual for the next day or so.
Thursday evening when Millie and I got home I took her temperature 'cause she was feeling warm, and indeed, she was running a fever. We gave her Tylenol and monitored things all night -- her temperature went up to 102 around 10:30 p.m. and that's about the time I decided that mommy and Millie were staying home on Friday. Millie's temperature was down to 99.5 the next morning, but we decided to do walk in hours at the Dr.'s office and have things checked out anyway. Millie's appetite the day before had been less than usual and her digestion seemed slow too -- plus the fever the night before -- we just wanted to be sure everything was alright. It seemed too late to be having effects from the shot, but apparently not. The Dr. checked Millie out, and of course she was the picture of perfect health. All happy and smiley, no temperature -- just perfect! So, we got a "watch and see" order and the Dr. thought the fever was probably a leftover effect from the shot and the decrease in appetite and BMs was probably due to the thrush. So, Millie and mommy got a free day at home ;)!
Saturday we spent the day out as a family -- we started talking to a woman about having Millie's baptism dress made. My initial thought was to have the gown made from my wedding dress, so we took it to a little Italian woman recommended by one of my friends. We learned one thing, there is no arguing with a little old Italian woman! She was very reluctant to cut up my dress. After some discussion we agreed to leave the dress with her for now and to come back with my baptism gown to see if she could make that bigger rather than using my wedding gown. So, we'll go back this weekend with not only my baptism gown, but my first communion gown too and see what she can do. I like the idea of making the baptism gown from my wedding dress -- I feel like it would really then be a family heirloom that we could pass down for many generations, whereas the liklihood that anyone will wear the dress as a wedding dress is pretty slim.... We'll see how the conversation goes this weekend. I have a feeling the little Italian woman will get her way.
After visiting the dress shop, we stopped in to a little corner breakfast place and treated daddy. Millie had a great time sitting at the table with mommy looking at everyone and everything in the restaurant. After that we headed back to Fairfield where mommy and Millie were meeting the other mommies and babies for lunch (most of them -- Kara and Em and Donna and Cole were out of town, they were missed!). Once again Millie had a great time looking around and exploring and it was great to sit and chat with the mommies. Turns out we're all losing our hair -- mommies and babies alike! -- and dealing with a plethora of other new mommy issues, not to mention sick babies. Daddy had dropped us off, but got back before we were done, so Millie went and took a nap in the bar area with dad while mom finished her lunch with two hands ;). It was a very enjoyable afternoon for everyone.
Sunday brought with it a very sleepy baby -- so much stimulation the day before wore her out! Her thrush seemed to be bothering her too as she was fussy from time to time (especially when mommy and daddy were on the phone :)). The amazing thing was that for as tired as she was and as bad as she might have been feeling, she was VERY chatty! When she was crying, the best thing to do was to lie her down on her back next to me so she could look up into my face. I talked to her, sympathized with her and echoed back her emotions and soon enough her face was unscrunched, her eyes were open and we were having a great conversation complete with giggles from both sides! Millie was quite impressed that mommy could make the same sounds that she could. I'm doing my best to get her to imitate "mama" ;). We're working on daddy too... And the chattering hasn't stopped ;).
Millie was talking before this weekend, but it wasn't too consistent -- you never knew when you would be lucky enough to talk with her. Now though, it's a pretty sure bet that she'll talk to you when she sees you. You, her mobile, her toys, anyone who is around! I captured some video of her doing just that this afternoon :).
Monday things got back to normal. Millie seems to be feeling better -- she's eating well and sleeping well again. Though, today she thought she was a big girl and didn't need a nap. Stephanie earned her money today! We're still working on clearning up the thrush with medicine, but other than that everyone is very happy and healthy. The good thing about so many trips to the Dr.'s office is that Millie got weighed a lot. 11 pounds 6 ounces on Tuesday the 28th and 11 pounds 8 ounces on Friday the 1st! Up a whole half a pound from the week before. Simply amazing how quickly she is growing... Though, I must say she's still a little chickpea and she still has a little pea head :).
In non-baby news (kind of). Mommy made it to the gym twice last week! Quite the leap from where I was pre-pregnancy, but I'll find my way back again. I tried out a couple of new gyms with a co-worker last week, looking for one that will help increase my motivation. I found one I liked and Millie seemed to approve too, but I might stick with the cheapie one we are already at -- it's 24 hours which means theoretically I could go early in the morning before work. Still trying to make that theory a reality.
We've had a busy couple of weeks compounded by a mildly sick baby who needed lots of hugs and cuddles. Millie's cold finally cleared up early last week, so we were clear to get her DTaP shot on Tuesday. Of course, the weekend before we noticed that her tongue was sporting more thrush than usual, so I made another appointment with the Dr. instead of just seeing the nurse for shots. Dr. Moore was happy to see that Millie's cold was gone and commented on the fact that she had been seeing a lot of the babies from our mommy group lately. Which was true -- we actually got off pretty easy compared to some of the other babies, lots of colds, ear infections and even a case of RSV. Somehow Millie got pegged as patient zero and we were told no more playdates for a while ;( (in a joking way). I'm pretty sure Millie was wrongly accused! We're just happy that everyone is on the mend now.
So, Millie got her shot after being officially diagnosed with thrush and given a prescription to clear it up. As always, Millie was a smiley delight at the Dr.'s office. She gave me a look of "why are you letting this happen?" as she was stuck with the shot, stuck out her little lip, gave a cry and then calmed back down as soon as I picked her up. There were no immediate effects of the shot and things went on as usual for the next day or so.
Thursday evening when Millie and I got home I took her temperature 'cause she was feeling warm, and indeed, she was running a fever. We gave her Tylenol and monitored things all night -- her temperature went up to 102 around 10:30 p.m. and that's about the time I decided that mommy and Millie were staying home on Friday. Millie's temperature was down to 99.5 the next morning, but we decided to do walk in hours at the Dr.'s office and have things checked out anyway. Millie's appetite the day before had been less than usual and her digestion seemed slow too -- plus the fever the night before -- we just wanted to be sure everything was alright. It seemed too late to be having effects from the shot, but apparently not. The Dr. checked Millie out, and of course she was the picture of perfect health. All happy and smiley, no temperature -- just perfect! So, we got a "watch and see" order and the Dr. thought the fever was probably a leftover effect from the shot and the decrease in appetite and BMs was probably due to the thrush. So, Millie and mommy got a free day at home ;)!
Saturday we spent the day out as a family -- we started talking to a woman about having Millie's baptism dress made. My initial thought was to have the gown made from my wedding dress, so we took it to a little Italian woman recommended by one of my friends. We learned one thing, there is no arguing with a little old Italian woman! She was very reluctant to cut up my dress. After some discussion we agreed to leave the dress with her for now and to come back with my baptism gown to see if she could make that bigger rather than using my wedding gown. So, we'll go back this weekend with not only my baptism gown, but my first communion gown too and see what she can do. I like the idea of making the baptism gown from my wedding dress -- I feel like it would really then be a family heirloom that we could pass down for many generations, whereas the liklihood that anyone will wear the dress as a wedding dress is pretty slim.... We'll see how the conversation goes this weekend. I have a feeling the little Italian woman will get her way.
After visiting the dress shop, we stopped in to a little corner breakfast place and treated daddy. Millie had a great time sitting at the table with mommy looking at everyone and everything in the restaurant. After that we headed back to Fairfield where mommy and Millie were meeting the other mommies and babies for lunch (most of them -- Kara and Em and Donna and Cole were out of town, they were missed!). Once again Millie had a great time looking around and exploring and it was great to sit and chat with the mommies. Turns out we're all losing our hair -- mommies and babies alike! -- and dealing with a plethora of other new mommy issues, not to mention sick babies. Daddy had dropped us off, but got back before we were done, so Millie went and took a nap in the bar area with dad while mom finished her lunch with two hands ;). It was a very enjoyable afternoon for everyone.
Sunday brought with it a very sleepy baby -- so much stimulation the day before wore her out! Her thrush seemed to be bothering her too as she was fussy from time to time (especially when mommy and daddy were on the phone :)). The amazing thing was that for as tired as she was and as bad as she might have been feeling, she was VERY chatty! When she was crying, the best thing to do was to lie her down on her back next to me so she could look up into my face. I talked to her, sympathized with her and echoed back her emotions and soon enough her face was unscrunched, her eyes were open and we were having a great conversation complete with giggles from both sides! Millie was quite impressed that mommy could make the same sounds that she could. I'm doing my best to get her to imitate "mama" ;). We're working on daddy too... And the chattering hasn't stopped ;).
Millie was talking before this weekend, but it wasn't too consistent -- you never knew when you would be lucky enough to talk with her. Now though, it's a pretty sure bet that she'll talk to you when she sees you. You, her mobile, her toys, anyone who is around! I captured some video of her doing just that this afternoon :).
Monday things got back to normal. Millie seems to be feeling better -- she's eating well and sleeping well again. Though, today she thought she was a big girl and didn't need a nap. Stephanie earned her money today! We're still working on clearning up the thrush with medicine, but other than that everyone is very happy and healthy. The good thing about so many trips to the Dr.'s office is that Millie got weighed a lot. 11 pounds 6 ounces on Tuesday the 28th and 11 pounds 8 ounces on Friday the 1st! Up a whole half a pound from the week before. Simply amazing how quickly she is growing... Though, I must say she's still a little chickpea and she still has a little pea head :).
In non-baby news (kind of). Mommy made it to the gym twice last week! Quite the leap from where I was pre-pregnancy, but I'll find my way back again. I tried out a couple of new gyms with a co-worker last week, looking for one that will help increase my motivation. I found one I liked and Millie seemed to approve too, but I might stick with the cheapie one we are already at -- it's 24 hours which means theoretically I could go early in the morning before work. Still trying to make that theory a reality.
