Cross-Country tour (half-way at least...)
725 miles (roughly), 10 hours, 8 potty breaks, and 7 bottles of water (necessitating all the potty breaks ) -- reaching Monroe, Michigan? Priceless!
That's how our trip to Michigan started last Friday. The drive up was pretty easy all things considered and we pulled into Monroe around 2:00 in the afternoon. We got a chance to visit with our old neighbors, the Brady's, to check on our house, and to meet with a realtor (the house is going back on the market -- keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer to St. Joseph!). The house looks pretty good. Some of the plants didn't quite survive our departure and we have a stray stalk of corn growing in the back garden, but other than that, all was well. We're really hoping to get it sold quickly and without too much financial damage.
Over the next day and a half, we stair-stepped our way up to Unionville, visiting with friends along the way. We had dinner with Wayne folks, Steve and Kay and Sub. Steve and Kay were gracious enough to let us crash with them Friday night. Steve then proceeded to treat us to a fabulous breakfast buffet Saturday morning! We're talking chocolate chip waffles!! It was great. We made a trip to Farmington Hill's farmers market after all that eating and picked up some fruit for our next leg of the trip. We really enjoyed hanging out with Steve and Kay -- it was the second time we got to see them this summer! Great company, and Steve's high-energy antics are always good for a smile!
From Farmington Hills we made our way to White Lake to visit with the Wiltse and Sonk families. Ryan and Carrie just happened to be in town from Denver the same weekend we were, so we couldn't pass up this rare chance to see them. We haven't seen them since we all fled Michigan to opposite corners (almost) of the country. It was great to see them and to hang out with their families just like old times. Ryan became an uncle for the first time just days before -- he's gonna get lots of practice with babies now -- well, at least from a distance. All is well with Ryan and Carrie, they are loving Colorado!
After more good food, we made our last leg of the trip up to Unionville. We got a chance to visit with Mom and Dad for a few hours before calling it a night and enjoying some sleep!
Sunday was our baby shower, and it was wonderful! Katelyn, Meghan, Amy, Kevin, Mom, Aunt Janet, Aunt Margaret, Kristen, Susan, Amy's mom -- everyone did such a great job with so many little personal touches around the room. There was red and white gingham everywhere! Along with lots of little stuffed animals . It was great to see so much family in one place and to celebrate with everyone the coming of our little one. There will be pictures soon ! It was a nice, small, intimate shower with good company, good food (cupcakes, yum!) and lots of love wrapped up in packages and bows and passed on to the baby. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone and all of the beautiful gifts we got. We certainly feel blessed and lucky. Of course, the time was too short, but we did enjoy the chance to spend at least a little time with everyone. It was great to see Kristen and Susan's kids too -- perfectly behaved little ones! Kamdyn said I could take her home with me (she was dressed in red and white gingham and would have matched the baby's room perfectly!), but I think her mommy would have missed her.
Sunday was definitely the high-light of our trip, but it wasn't the end of the excitement. We made another trip down to Detroit (Novi) on Monday and took Mom and Meghan along for the ride. Meghan made a stop at the mall and made the baby a teddy bear at "Build a Bear" -- dressed in a Tiger's uniform of course! Daddy feels that there is balance in the world now, as we received several Tiger's themed gifts ... . On our way back to Unionville we made a stop in at Birch Run and did a little mommy shopping (just a little...). Tuesday it was time to load up the car already. Amazingly, we were able to load in just about everything we received at the shower. That little infiniti can hold more than you'd think! We then spent the afternoon hanging out with Katelyn and Meghan. Meghan got to challenge Uncle Scott at Guitar Hero and both of the girls took him on in Football (playstation) -- they beat him on that one! We had lots of laughs playing Scene It Jr. with the girls (Meghan and I won!) -- particularly regarding "Potty Fish O'Kneel" Yeah, don't ask, just know it sent both of the girls into endless peals of gut wrenching laughter!
818 miles, 13 1/2 hours, 10 stops (I think), and 7 more bottles of water -- reaching Norwalk, CT and knowing we wouldn't be setting foot in PA again for a LONG time (sorry Aunt Diane, but that is one REALLY long state!!) beyond priceless! We rolled into Norwalk around 5:30, stopped for dinner and then headed home. Needless to say, we didn't last very long after story time that night. Despite the long drives and long days, we wouldn't have given up this trip for anything. It was a wonderful way to spend our time off and to focus on our family -- those members that are here with us now, and those that are on the way
