There Were Horses Too

In addition to meeting the chicks, the girls enjoyed meeting the horses at Carrie's friend Mary's farm (right next door to the "chick farm").  Merrill helped feed the horses some carrots with a little help -- Millie preferred to feed the chickens :).

Notice the cast and crutches on Carrie -- she got thrown from a horse a little over a week ago and got a nasty break on her ankle.  It's hard for her to be up and around right now, but it's equally hard for her to be stuck inside on a chair all day!  I think the girls have been a fun distraction :).  That's Ruby up there -- she just turned a year old -- she's the one who threw Carrie.  As you can see, there are no hard feelings between the two.
Isn't Ruby beautiful?  Look at those big brown eyes and beautiful snout.  Just a really striking horse!
The horses were wearing masks over their eyes and ears -- Millie wanted to know why the "bad" horses were wearing them ... (because we joked that Ruby was a "bad" horse").  We learned that all of the horses wore them to keep the flies off.  They are kind of like sunglasses so the horses can still see.  We learned so much!
We started to move on to another pasture so we could meet Carrie's horse Seamus who is temporarily living at Mary's while Ryan and Carrie get their own barn and pasture ready for him.  Ruby and Luke did not want us to leave -- you can see them following us!
And this is what 20 years of horse farming gets you -- a great big pile of manure!  I pay a lot of money for bags of that stuff at Lowes!!

I think in a couple of years we're going to have to negotiate a deal for "farm camp" for the girls!!
